MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Haitian President René Garcia Préval today (15 January) surveyed the damage from the air caused by Tuesdays massive earthquake that struck the capital Port-au-Prince and neighboring areas.The 7.0 magnitude earthquake is said to have affected one-third of Haitis 9-million strong population. Many of the people in the hard-hit capital, Port-au-Prince, do not have access to food, water, shelter and electricity. Préval stressed that the priority was to get his government as well as the UN Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH) back on their feet, and speculated that the top UN official in Haiti, Hédi Annabi and his deputy Luiz Carlos da Costa who are trapped in the rubble of the Missions Headquarters, are already dead. SOUNDBITE (Creole) René Garcia Préval, President of Haiti: “The priority is to put MINUSTAH and the government back into a functional state. We’ve seen that the UN headquarters collapsed. The Head of the UN Mission and his deputy and many of their staff are dead.” The President pointed out that clearing the roads in order to be able to deliver aid and burying the dead are priorities as well.SOUNDBITE (Creole) René Garcia Préval, President of Haiti: “The second priority is to clear the roads so we can get help to the people. And I believe the third priority is to sanitize the area. There are thousands of cadavers that causing risks of epidemics. We have to – and we have already started to – take those bodies away.” This afternoon, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke by phone with the Haitian President and assured him the UN was fully mobilized to bring aid. There is now an urgent international appeal for aid and assistance. The quake struck just 10 miles south-west of Port au Prince – the densely populated capital of Haiti. terremoto en haiti ,,,,A strong earthquake hit Haiti Tuesday, causing a hospital in Petionville to collapse and severely damaging neighborhoods, according to reports. The U.S. Geological Survey measured a 7.0 magnitude, making it a major event.The epicenter was an estimated 10 miles outside of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Several buildings toppled and the streets of the city were reported to be full of panicked people.The USGS reported that the event happened at 4:53:09 p.m. Eastern time. The survey also detected a series of aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.9, 5.5, 5.1, and 4.8.”Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken,” said Henry Bahn, a U.S. official visiting the country. ”The sky is just gray with dust.”A local Tsunami Watch was in effect for Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic but no warning had been issued.Meantime in New York, residents of Haitian descent were anxious to hear word from their loved ones. Tens of thousands of New Yorkers have ties to Haiti.”While we are all still awaiting details about the earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince this evening, my thoughts and prayers are with all New Yorkers who have family and loved ones in the affected area,” said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “New York City and Haiti have long held a special, close relationship with each other. Not only do the families of some 125,000 New Yorkers hail from the country, but thousands more people travel between Haiti and New York regularly.”
